PREMIERE of ‘Pilgrim Hill’  at the Tintean Theatre Ballybunion on Friday October 14th at 8pm. It highlights the life of a bachelor Farmer and his struggles in rural Ireland. This is Gerard Barrett’s first full length film following the success of ‘The Valley of Knockanure’. The film was shot on location in Brosna, Ballylongford and Athea.

A.G.M. of Moyvane/Knockanure Community Games will be held in the Marian Hall at 8.30pm on Tuesday 11th October. The committee needs new people especially Parents of National School Children. Community Games caters for children from U8 to U16 in Teams and Individual events e.g. Football, Soccer, Dancing & Athletics. If any parent feel they can contribute in any way. A.G.M. of local Comhaltas  Branch will take place on Friday 14th October at the Marian Hall at 8.30pm. Anyone interested in traditional Irish music, song or dance are asked to attend. We are hoping to revitalise interest in Comhaltas in the parish and we would appreciate any help in doing so.

I grew up in a small country town called Listowel, in Co-Kerry on the South West of Ireland where there are about 1500 people. My childhood was no different to many other children’s in that I idolised my father and whatever my father did I wanted to do. The only problem was my dad had won five All Irelands (premierships) with Kerry so I had a lot to live up to. Full speech at

AUSTRALIA: The Advocate of September 26th 1945 reports the death of Fr Con Hanrahan, Parish Priest of East Malvern for 17 years. Fr Hanrahan died September 20th after spending several months in hospital, Fr Hanrahan noted that at Melbourne Hospital, you will see real charity, all are treated there without distinction.  Fr Hanrahan was born at Moyvane in 1892 and ordained at All Hollows  Dublin in 1917, went to Australia in a returning troop ship early 1918 and served in the Melbourne Archdiocese for 28 years. Archbishop Mannix presided at the Requiem Mass for Fr Con Hanrahan and was assisted by Rev W P Hackett, S J, Fr P Loughnan PP, Rev T Keogh, Rev J Durkin PP, Rev B Geoghegan PP, Rev P Gleesonn PP, Rev W Ebsworth PP, Rev M Brosnan PP, Rev L P Moran, Rev Harold. The choir consisted of 150 regular and diocesan priests . Cantors were, Rev Dr Jones, Rev B Murphy, R Rafter and A Randall. Coffin bearers were, Mr Maher, Hurley, Hogan, Winter, Welch and Murphy. Pallbearers, J O Shea representing Y.C.W., W J Welch representing C.Y.M.S., Messer’s Nash, Fahey and Mc Corkell, Holy Name Society, St Mary’s; Mr T Pearson , Holy Name Society, Holy Eucharist Church; Rev W Ryan former Parish Secretary and M J Mc Donnell former parishioner. Members of the Ladies Sacred heart Sodality and the Children of Mary from both sections of the Parish were at the graveside.
Work carried out in the Parish of East Melvern by Fr Hanrahan included, replacing the presbytery, cost £2,000; 1933 added room to school at cost of £850; Extra Church built in 1935; In 1939 , school was again remodelled and extended at cost of £4,000; Stained glass windows and pulpit in church cost £ 650; The Parish debt in 1929 was £8,300 and the time of his death it was reduced to £7,000.

DEATH occured in Los Angeles of Sr. Theresa Josephine Cotter late of Mountmahon, Abeyfeale. Margaret was daughter of John Cotter and Ellen McCarthy, born April 2, 1914, Died at Marycrest Manor, Culver City, California, September 22, 2011. Sister was predeceased by all of her siblings, Bishop Timothy, Sr. Augustine, LCM, Dan and Nicholas. St Theresa Josephine  is mourned by her cousin Sr. Mary Angela O’Connor, DMJ and all the Daughters of Mary and Joseph, also her nephews and nieces.

DEATH took place recently of Kathleen Carmody nee Keane, she was daughter of Francis Keane and Kitty Halpin of the Lots, Knockanure. Kathleen had siblings Mick who died about 50 years ago, Willie lives in Lisselton, Mary, Nora and Nellie. Kathleen Carmody was laid to rest at Barking, London.

Tadhg Moriarty, O.P. together with his contempories, the martyrs, Fr. Conor McCarthy, P.P. and Fr Dermot Francis O’Sullivan, O.F.M.  Rosary at 3.10pm.  Mass may be celebrated in Milltown Parish Church in the event of bad weather.  All are  welcome to attend.
