STUDY: parents of kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) might notice traditional revision methods – such as long study
sessions, revision flash cards, and silent reading – simply don’t work
for their teens.

In fact, these methods can instead lead to frustration, erosion of
confidence and possible burnout, according to The ADHD Centre, which
specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support of
children and adults with ADHD.

KERRY- Aug 16, 2009; A record for the greatest number of threshers
ever assembled to work the one field might just have been set in
Knockanure last weekend during the annual Vintage Day in the village.
As part of the plans — which includes making space for over 300
vintage machines — organizers are hoping to assemble the biggest fleet
of working threshers ever seen in the one field. “We’re confident we
will break the record for Munster, if not all of Ireland,” Treasurer
of the Vintage committee, Dan Hartnett, said

MARGARET STACK (1883-1959)

The Cook

Margaret Stack worked as the Wickwire family’s cook from 1904 to 1911.
She had emigrated from Athea, County Limerick, Ireland in 1904. Her
aunt, Catherine Stack Quirke, already lived in Cortland, and may have
arranged for her employment in the Wickwire mansion. Margaret was
single and only 21 years old when she began working for the Wickwires.

Stack socialized with the substantial Irish population in Cortland. A
March 19, 1910 article in the Cortland Standard describes a St.
Patrick’s Day Banquet, hosted by Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order
of Hiberians (AOH). The AOH was an Irish Catholic fraternal
organization who assisted Irish immigrants and protected Catholic
churches from anti-Catholic discrimination. Margaret Stack danced at
this event as one of a four-person Irish reel. A reel is a traditional
Irish step dance.

Like many servants in America, Stack had limited free time. Generally,
a servant had every Thursday afternoon off, as well as every other
Sunday. On her Sundays, Stack may have attended St. Mary’s Church on
North Main Street, which catered to Irish Catholics.

Despite servant norms back in the day, the Wickwires generously
granted their servants significant vacation time. In 1910, Margaret
Stack spent the entire summer in Ireland and the British Isles with
her fiancée, John Lane. They secured tickets through local agent James
Grant and sailed on the Baltic, a ship of the White Star Line (the
same line as The Titanic). After their arrival in Athea, Margaret
Stack married John Lane, and became Margaret Stack Lane.

John and Margaret spent the summer at her family home, and also sailed
through the British Isles. She then returned to Cortland in autumn and
resumed her position as the Wickwire cook, a job she held for another
year. Afterward, she returned to her native Ireland, where she ran a
grocery store with her husband, and started a family.

KITCHEN: Gone are the days of wall-to-wall kitchen cabinetry and the
perfect work triangle layout. Instead, we’ve entered the era of the
“collected kitchen”. And I don’t just mean collected decor (which is
also great!) – I mean the furniture. Welcome to return age of the
“unfitted” kitchen.

DANGER for children

The three-year limit is insufficient and outdated. In France, a study
on screen use among children raises the alarm, urging not to let them
use screens before the age of six. “Even repeated but short exposure,”
the research says, “has negative effects on socio-relational,
emotional, intellectual, and neurological development.” Therefore,
away with tablets, television, computers, and phones. The appeal “for
awareness among young parents, teachers, educators, pedagogues,
healthcare personnel, and policymakers” is published in a text jointly
signed by the French Society of Pediatrics, Public Health, Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry, and Ophthalmology, as well as the Francophone
Society of Health and Environment.
