ACTIVE Retired Day at the Community Centre Knockanure was due to be held on Monday 13th Dec. details from 068 49799.

SAINT  PIO Prayer Group  will meet in Listowel Church on Thursday 16th December, begin with the Rosary at 7.00pm and this will be followed by Mass and Benediction at 7.15pm, all are welcome.
Medjugorje Prayer Group Meeting was held on Monday 13th Dec., at 7.00pm, in St. Patrick’s Hall, Listowel. Next year is the 30th anniversary of the first apparitions at Medjugorje.

SENIOR Citizens Committee was delighted with the success of last Sunday weeks Party in Moyvane. Thanks to all the local business people who gave spot prizes and Newtownsandes Co-op for sponsoring the music for the day. Wishing you all a happy and peaceful Christmas.

HISTORIC Day for the Parish; Kerry County Council will hold their meeting at the Mariah Hall Moyvane on Monday 20th Dec. 2010. Many in the parish will be involved in the preparations and local man Mayor of Kerry Pat Leahy will chair the meeting. Hope the Councillors will pay a visit to the Knockanure Community Centre to view its fine facilities. The Council could make more use of community facilities and save on hotel expenses.

VISIT neighbours before the Christmas rush. Some may need assistance to cope with the severe weather. Please let your local clergy know that you are in hospital, as the data protection act prevents Priests from enquiring about their parishioners at the hospital desk. In time we may have a hospital leaky site, imitating the leaking of the US diplomatic mail, where will the data protection office be then.

EVENTS: Athea Going Strong Annual Christmas Dinner and Party will be held at Top of the Town on Wednesday December 15th 2010. Mass in the Church at 12.30pm and dinner served immediately afterwards; Car Boot Sale at Knockdown on Sunday Dec. 19th at 10am in aid of Killeaney AFC;  DeafHear will have an outreach morning at Tralee Library on Dec.17th from 11am to 12.30pm; Afternoon of Prayer will be held at Scartaglen Church on Sunday Dec. 19th at 2.45pm;

 Garda Youth Achievement Awards closing date for nominations Dec. 17th; A Healing Service will be held in the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Templeglantine on Sunday, December 19 at 4pm, All are welcome; Munster’s premier Badminton team event for the Butterfield Cup, first played for the 1947, was staged at the Listowel Community Centre on Sunday last; Pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi led by Bishop Bill Murphy from April 25 to 2nd

EU’s statistical office, show that Ireland, gas prices for medium to large businesses are 14% below the EU average, electricity prices for these customers are also below the EU average. Domestic electricity prices fell by 12.2% in the year up to June.

BUDGET provided many hours of comment last week, instead of bickering, could a few volunteers promote the best interests of our little country. Between E50,000 and E100,000 is being demanded to progress a survey of the Listowel Bypass, surely there must be plenty in the Council Offices able and willing to do the work.

SCHOOLS: The Local National School has a fine display of Christmas posters on view. Kearney’s Bar in Moyvane has also a fine Xmas display. It has been announced that 698 Post Primary Schools are to share E21million in grants for high tech. equipment. Safefood are giving free DVD to primary schools on hand washing, details from 1850 404 567. A recent comparative study on education in Ireland, discussed in the press last week leaves many questions to be answered.

JOURNALS: Most of the local parish journals are now in the shops. Ballyguiltenane Journal again has many articles and a host of photographs including some fine ones from Tim Griffin. Eileen O Brien tells us about how life has changed; Tom Ahern gives short story of lives of Thomas Culhane, Eithne Strong, Moss Keane, Eamon O Connell, born Mountcollins 1907 and the history of the Olympic Ballroom in Newcastle West; Dr. Brendan Barrett and Pat Brosnan have several poems; Peg Prendeville gives us several pieces including a fine interview with Moyvane woman 95 years old Liza Mulvihill, now in Glin for many years; Langan History and Garda Memorial Garden well researched by George Langan; Also remembered; Wesleyan Community Tarbert, William Smith O Brien, Fr Tommy O Hanlon, Fr Tom Relihan, Fr Tim Hanrahan, Fr Joe Walsh, Blacksmiths, the crew who drew lots on who were to die to feed the rest and many more contributions too numerous to mention here.

FULL Moon, Winter Solstice and Lunar Eclipse on the 21st Dec. Last week hot plasma  filament from the Sun in a few hours grew to more than 250,000 miles long. Meteors shower will be visible on the evening of December 13th and the morning of December 14th.   Recent Severe weather was hard on all both man and animal. Households were grumbling because they had no water, what about farmers who had to cope and cope they did.
GOV.: announced the 2011 Bioenergy Scheme to grant aid the planting of willow and miscanthus crops. The Bioenergy Schemes have supported the planting of almost 3,000 hectares of energy crops since 2007.

 TITHE: Mr Parnell described the Tithe system to Parliament in May 1809; No Tithes on cattle in the North no tithes on potatoes and flax.The tithe in Connaught is 6d on any quantity of hay. An acre of wheat producing an av.8 barrels @av price 30s would give tithe of 24s, the usual charge is 12 shillings. The usual charge for meadow is 7s per Ac. producing a crop of 2.5 tons av price of 50s , giving tithe of 12/6.Acre of potatoes producing crop of 70 barrels @ av price of 4s, the usual tithe is 8s.

Remarkable Local People;

ICA are celebrating their centenary this year. Kit Ahern was ICA President from 1961 to `64, she was the first woman to be elected Chairman to Kerry County Council, first woman TD for North Kerry. Sean Lemass nominated Kit to the Senate; she was also a member of Council of Europe. Kit Ahern nee Liston born 1915 at Athea, died 27th Dec. 2007.

AHERN: James P Ahern died in 1984 aged 87 years, he was predeceased by  his wife Mary Walsh Ahern and 13 siblings. James P was born at Direen Athea on 14th May 1897 to Patrick Ahern and Julia O Sullivan Ahern. James P and Mary had five sons , Stephen P Ahern of New Haven police, Chief Inspector Police James Ahern, Timothy R Ahern, Lt. William L Ahern, Sgt John G Ahern , four daughters Mary Rowe, Julia Willett, Margaret McMahon, and Eileen Stackpoole. Requiem Massfor James P Ahern was celebrated by his nephed Fr John Ahern.

LINK with 1690: Mrs Hannah Woulfe White died aged 79 years in 1946, she remembered her grandfather Edward Richard Woulfe born at Cratloe 1788, he in turn remembered hid grandfather Maurice Woulfe born 1690 , he died at Cratloe aged 102 years.

DEATH took place on December 4th 2010 of Betty Coughlan nee Lynch, of Reeasta, Ardagh. Betty is survived by her husband  Jimmy and daughters Margaret and Elizabeth, brothers Paddy, Con, Mike and Jimmy, sisters Nancy and Margaret, she was predeceased by brothers Tom and Jack; Requiem Mass for Betty was celebrated at St. Moluas Church Ardagh on Tuesday Dec. 7th by Fr Madden P.P. assisted by Fr McMahon of Knockanure. Betty Coughlan was laid to rest at Ahavoher Cemetery, Gale Bridge, at the graveside the wind was biting cold. Betty Coughlan was daughter of Jimmy Lynch and Catherine Regan of Gortdromagowna, Knockanure.

DEATH took place unexpectedly on December 5th 2010 of Margaret Dillon nee Scannell of Meen and late of Bunagara, Listowel.  Margaret was predeceased by her husband Michael and is survived by her daughter Monnie. Following Requiem Mass in Listowel Church on Wednesday December 8th `10, Margaret Dillon was laid to rest at St Michael’s Churchyard, Listowel.

DEATH took place on December 5th 2010 of Maureen Geaney nee O’Callaghan of Clooshmore, Dingle and late of Strand Street, Dingle. Maureen is survived by husband Dave, sons Daithí, Tom, Paul, Seán and Colm. Requiem Mass for Maureen Geaney was celebrated at  St. Mary’s Church, Dingle on Tuesday 7th December 2010, she was laid to rest at St. Brendan’s Cemetery, Dingle. Maureen was well known in Knockanure as she was first cousin of Fr. Brendan O Callaghan.

DEATH took place on December 5th 2010 of Kay Holloway nee Carmody of Kilpeacon House, Crecora, she was predeceased by her husband Dr. Ivor, sister of the late Eileen, Sr. Hannah and Michael. Her children were Dr. Heather, Ernest, Dawn and the late Jacinta. Brothers Eddie, Con and John, sisters Elizabeth, Marie and Noreen survive her. Requiem Mass for Kay Holloway was celebrated in Crecora Church on Wednesday December 8th; Kay was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery after Mass.

DEATH took place on December 8th 2010 of Peggy Moriarty Ballygoughlin, Glin, and formerly of Coolard, Lisselton. Peggy is survived by her sisters Mary, Eileen and Bridie. Following Requiem Mass on Friday December 10th at St. Theresa’s, Ballydonoghue, Peggy Moriarty was laid to rest at Gale Cemetery, Lisselton. Bridie is married to Michael Moloney of Moyvane.

HOLY Thorn Tree of Glastonbury, Somerset, was vandalised recently, it is visited by thousands every year to pay homage and leave tokens of worship, claimed to have grown from staff of Joseph of Arimathea 2,000 years ago.

FIRST Apparition in the US approved, it is the appearance of Our Lady of Good Help to a young emigrant at Wisconsin in 1859, the statue is unusual as it has blond hair with a crown.

CHOIR Practice Knockanure Church Choir for Mass on Christmas Eve, was at 8pm on Monday 13th December. All are welcome.

COLLECTION: Samaritans will hold a Church Gate Collection on 24th / 25th December. Knockanure Sacristan Annual Christmas Offerings. Envelopes will be available at the back of the Church for anybody wishing to donate to the Sacristan on the 24th & 25th December.

CONFESSIONS: Visiting Priests will be available for Confessions on Tuesday 21st at 7.30pm in Knockanure and 8pm in Moyvane, Confessions before Vigil Mass on Saturdays.
