LIMOUSIN: Roundhill Limousin heifer sale

Agriland caught up with Doreen Corridan ahead of the online sale to
hear the backstory to the sale of 20 maiden heifers. She explained
that the focus of the herd is different to most Limousin breeders in
that the herd genetics has embarked down the polled Limousin route
approximately a decade ago.

She said: “I’d be the only breeder in Ireland really breeding polled
Limousins. It’s very rare. If you take across Europe, the majority of
the Limousins Limousins in Germany are polled and most French breeders
are using polled genetics.

goals.

BUSHWICK — For more than six decades, Msgr. James Kelly’s law office
on Wyckoff Avenue has handled standing-room-only crowds of clients
seeking U.S. citizenship. So, it is not surprising that in the days
following President Donald Trump’s inauguration, this 87-year-old
diocesan priest from Limerick, Ireland, has become an interview “get”
for multiple news outlets. Just look at his appointment calendar. A
Feb. 19 interview with The Tablet followed reports by Currents News,
EWTN, and the New York Times. An interview with another newspaper was
set for Feb. 20. Journalists want to know Msgr. Kelly’s take on Trump
2.0’s immigration plans, but he doesn’t have much to tell them — at
least not yet.

OYSTER: 1938 19th February (IT).

Shannon Fisheries Control: – —- The Oyster Fisheries:

The Electricity Supply Board has come to the conclusion that it would
be desirable to revive, if possible, the oyster fisheries. There were
extensive areas in both the Shannon and the deep water of its estuary,
which were suitable for the development of oyster fisheries. In former
years certain beds had been worked by private enterprise but they had
been now abandoned. The beds extended from Foynes westward to
Carrigaholt Bay, but the beds most successful worked centred round
Kilrush Harbour. (In Poulnasherry Bay). The Board were of the opinion
that the development of the oyster fisheries would prove not only
remunerative, but would give constant employment to a number of
skilled fishermen who were at present unemployed. ———.

Trips on the Shannon.

A series of most enjoyable trips can be made on the Shannon, with
Limerick as headquarters. The sail down the Shannon from Limerick to
the Atlantic is one of the most delightful imaginable, and is in many
respects superior to the much-famed Rhine. Though there are not the
same number of castellated mansions to be seen on the Shannon as on
the Rhine, there is a far greater volume of water and the scenery is a
great deal more varied and pleasing. The Limerick Steamship Company
run a holiday steamer from Limerick to Cappagh, at the mouth of
Kilrush Bay. The vessel is Belfast built, and moves rapidly, with an
easy motion. There is plenty of seating accommodation on the upper
deck, from which unimpeded views can be had of the rarest bits of
scenery in the Counties of Clare, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary with
the Kerry and Knockmealdown Mountains forming an agreeable and
inspiring background. The Shannon at stages is several miles wide, and
all along the shores are beautiful country residences and well-wooded
demesnes.

Sat, 15 Feb, 2020 – Irish Examiner

Faction fighting in Ireland lasted from the start of the 18th century
to the end of the 19th, yet has received little attention from
historians.

Faction Fights

Similarly, in the mid-1600s, the O’Briens, lords of Co. Clare, who
owned the lordship of Tarbert, settled many Clare families in North
Kerry, including the Mulvihills; this created resentment among several
local families, and ‘led to many bloody fights’.

The Cooleen faction mostly comprised ‘representatives of old Kerry
families’, chiefly the Flahertys, as well as the Ahernes, the Bání
O’Connors and the Sheehys. Another account also numbered the
Houlihans, the O’Callaghans and the Roches in their ranks.

On the other side, the Lawlors and Black Mulvihills were supported by
the Walshs, the Keanes, the O’Briens, the Sullivans and the Enrights.

The Cooleens and the Lawlors often met at Listowel.

Indeed both groups were characterised in 1826 as ‘Listowel factions’.

POOR RELIEF: Peter Robinson Scheme to Canada

In 1823, as a form of poor relief, the Imperial government began a
program to assist individuals from southern Ireland to emigrate to
Canada. The settlement of these emigrants was entrusted to the civil
administration of Upper Canada and Peter Robinson, the brother of the
Attorney General of Upper Canada, was placed in charge of organising
and supervising the undertaking. The first group of emigrants,
