CONGRATULATIONS to Fr. Kevin McNamara on the fortieth anniversary of his ordination, it is also a sad time for him as he is unable to celebrate, due to government restrictions. The pain of losing his mother immediately after his ordination, casts a sorrowful shadow, which lasts a lifetime. Well done to Fr. Kevin for organising the Novena last week, many hours work and the contribution of so many volunteers, are an inspiration to people who may have become feeble in the faith. The success of the Novena which was done from the grass roots up, is an example to big government, that ordinary people knows what is best for the community.

SPEAKERS at Moyvane Church Novena last week, details from Parish Newsletter, see social media for much more; Thady opened the Novena reminding us of the warm humanity of the Sacred Heart. Geraldine our first speaker reminded us in such a moving and generous way of the reality of Faith, Hope and Love……..and the greatest is Love. Her husband John, 49, son Tomás, 14 and Amelia, 6 still motivate her daily to keep their love alive. I cried and prayed for her – powerful start. Then our very own Gabriel – honest, uplifting and from the heart – a light that darkness could not overpower. When he said ‘he was snookered!’ No confession, no Communion, cut off from the Sacred Heart! – that was so sad and painful to hear. Thank God for the Sacred Heart light, love and forgiveness which Gabriel never gave up on. Next, John Quinn from the ‘Home of the Oyster’ – Clarinbridge. The seven seanfhocails all directing us to the Heart of Jesus. Gems of faith placed before us by an extraordinary wordsmith – still writing, still sharing, still inspiring. His voice is magic. So sad to hear John tell us about poor Fr. Dineen S.J. late of Rathmore who paid an awful price for his dedication to the Irish language. Fr. Seán put a lovely reflective presentation on the ‘new normal’ before us on Sunday. So well-crafted and presented, we were all so proud that he is one of our own – the spontaneous round of applause showed that. Mairead with the beautiful Sacred Heart statue which her late great mum received on her baptism day has been a treasured presence to this very day in her home and with her loving family. It has inspired her in her generous work and presence with those who live alone and those heavy with loneliness. She called on us to invest more in family life allowing the Sacred Heart to inspire us. Next, Brenda invited us in a lovely way to move from head to heart. That journey for her has been so, so special in beautiful Knockanure. In a move to heart, especially the Sacred Heart, life can and will be so much more meaningful. Next, we had Fr. Tom speaking to us on the occasion of his 37th Anniversary of his Ordination, the Feast of St. Columba. Lovingly he traced the early days of his Priesthood which brought him to Derry in the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland. The people helped him – they were people of faith, they were people of heart who trusted the Sacred Heart.

CANADA: “residential school” system was an atrocity, in which the Church should never have been involved. Under this system, set up in the late 19th century by the Canadian government’s Department of Indian Affairs, more than 150,000 children were taken from their families and trained—often under deficient and even abusive conditions—to adapt to the country’s now-dominant culture. This was not “genocide,” as some activists have charged, but it was a deplorable effort to eradicate a native culture.

HEAVY CASUALTIES IN CO. KERRY. OFFICER & THREE R.I.C DEAD
An ambush of, 12 R.I.C, mid-way between Castlemaine and Milltown, on Wed. evening, resulted in the following 9 casualties
KILLED. Dist.-lnsp. M’Caughey (35), native of Co Monaghan; Sergt. Collery, Sligo; Const. Quirke (33), Co. Cork) and Const. T. Cooney (28), Co. Leitrim. WOUNDED. Const. M’Cormack (23), Dublin; Const. Harvey, slightly, in face; Const. Bergin, in leg; Const. Bowles in back and leg; Const. Toomey, slightly;
The other three policemen—Constables Foley, Beard, and Herne—were uninjured. Sergt. Collery leaves a wife and 9 children.
FROM BOTH SIDES OF ROAD. The patrol were returning on cycles to Killorglin from Tralee, when fire was opened on them from both sides of the road, at a spot where the fences afforded good cover to the attackers. Before the patrol had time to realise their position, the District-Inspector and Sergt. Collory, who were leading, fell. Then began a fight which, during its half hour’s duration, was most intense, the firing being continuous, and revolvers, rifles, and bombs brought into use. After the officer and sergeant were shot the remainder of the patrol sought what little shelter the road offered and returned the fire, using bombs with, they declare, apparent effect. Const. Quirke was killed rather early, and Const. Cooney fatally wounded.
TERRIFIC SHOOTING. The fierce conflict went on until only 3 of the police were left unwounded. Assisting their wounded comrades, they retreated, having left their cycles, but taking all their arms and those of their disabled companions. The people for miles around were in terror, for the noise of the shooting was terrific.
When things had subsided the lonely figure of a woman was seen over the strewn bodies. Rev. T. O’Sullivan, C.C., Milltown, was shortly on the scene, and rendered spiritual aid All through the evening Fr. O’Sullivan did everything possible for the seriously wounded, as did Dr. Sheehan, M.O. The bodies were conveyed to the Catholic church, Milltown, and the seriously wounded to houses near by, while the others were assisted by their comrades to Killorglin by a circuitous route. All have since been conveyed to Tralee.
The casualties to the attackers are unknown.
A CONSTABLE DYING.
According to another account, the ambushers opened fire from behind a hedge. The R.I.C. returned the fire, and after a sharp exchange eight of the Constabulary fell—four killed and four wounded—the remaining four getting back to Killorglin by the railway
The message adds that it is not known whether there are any casualties among the I.R.A.
OFFICIAL REPORT.
The Dublin Castle report
District-Inspector, sergeant, and 2 constables were shot dead and and 3 other constables were wounded.
ATTACK ON MILITARY.
G.H.Q., Dublin, announced yesterday “While on patrol at 8 p.m. on Tues a soldier of the Royal Fusiliers was accidentally wounded. Yesterday morning a party of the R. Fusiliers on bicycles, accompanied by a light motor van, proceeded from Killarney to Rathmore to bring in the wounded man. When a section of the party reached the river crossing one mile north of Baraduff, on the return journey in the evening, heavy fire was opened upon them at about 400 yards range,
Though the party numbered only one officer and 10 other ranks, they advanced at once towards the direction from which the fire came, but the attackers had disappeared. The driver of the car was wounded in the foot. At the point of the ambush the road had been littered with broken glass, which had been placed there since the morning.
In the meantime the soldier patient had, owing to the bad state of the road, been transferred to a hand trolley and all safely reached their destination.
REFLECTION: Luke and I discuss how our desires are strongly mimetic, that is, imitative, and how there are two groups of people that act as models of desire for us: celebrities and public figures who are distant from us, and friends, family, and colleagues who are close to us. Luke explains why it’s actually that latter group where we experience the most rivalry and conflict, because the more similar we are, the more we end up competing for the same things, the more envy we experience, and the more we want to differentiate ourselves from the crowd, even though the areas in which to do so can be increasingly small. In fact, someone can be a model of desire, not only in influencing us to imitate them, but in motivating us to act in the opposite way. Luke shares how mimetic desire can be both a negative and destructive or a positive and productive force, and offers advice on how to harness it for the latter purpose by humbly recognizing the way other people are influencing our wants, and using that knowledge to opt out of games we don’t want to play, utilize the healthy aspects of competition without allowing it to get us off track, and intentionally choose worthy, even transcendent, models of desire to emulate.
