BEST Wishes to Paddy Reidy of the the Bicycle Shop, Abbeyfeale who has retired from the Abbeyfeale Fire brigade after 38 years service, Paddy’s charitable work includes supporting St. Ita’s Wrenboys’ under the leadership of founder members Paddy Finucane of Knockanure and Mike Lynch, the group over the past 15 years have raised E40,000 to support two local priests in their Missions in Africa and Mexico. Entertainment at the retirement party for Paddy at the Fr Casey Clubhouse was provided by several musicians including the Finucane Family of Knockanure.

History; Mary Spring Rice had an article in the July 23rd 1919 edition of the farmers Gazette on training the young on how to start gardening at National Schools; John Flanagan aged 41 years made a record throw of the hammer on July 24th 1909 the distance was 184 feet 4 inches; Queen Victoria arrived at Cork on August 1st 1849 for an official visit; James Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald arrived at Kerry coast in July 1579 with expedition from Pope Gregory X111 and Spain, Most of the troops were massacred in November 1580, supervised by Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Edward Denny. English army was under command of Lord Grey de Wilton. The Edmund Spencer and Hugh O’Neill were present at the massacre. Pope Clement appointed Oliver Plunkett Primate of Ireland in 1669; they were only two bishops in Ireland at the time. 1,000 people attended the first Annual Remembrance Day for Oliver Plunkett in Chicago on July 12th 1959, when St Oliver was canonised on the 12th of October 1975 he became Irelands first canonised saint in 700 years.

DEATH has taken place of Bridie Stackpoole in her 74th year; she is survived by her husband Jack, sons John, Tom, Peter and Dan, daughters Hannah and Helen. Mass for Bridie Stackpoole was celebrated in Athea Church on Saturday August 1st `09 by Fr. Patrick Bowen P.P. Athea assister by Canon Kelly, Fr John Lucid, Fr Gerard O Leary and Fr Tim O Leary and Fr Tom McMahon. Following Mass Bridie was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery Athea beside her sister Mary B. Sheahan who died on June 1st 1993 aged 69 years. Bridie was a daughter of Hannah Hartnett of Abbeyfeale and Jack Sheahan of Lower Athea where Bridie lived all her life. The Flaherty of Knockanure sang the hymns at the Mass. Bridie would be proud to have heard her granddaughter beautifully sing On the Wings of an Angel after Mass.
