TB: IFA President Francie Gorman said that the Bovine TB Action Plan
launched today by the Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon contains
some positive aspects, but also some measures which would be very
tough for the farmers whose herds fail a TB test.
“While we fully understand that there needs to be a new programme, it
would have been better to have agreement with farmers,” he said.
“I would acknowledge that the Minister and the Department took on
board a lot of the concerns raised by IFA and others. However, this
document was not agreed with the IFA,” he said.

FARM NEWS: These days, I’m meeting farmers who are telling me that
no-one in their family wants to take over when they retire. This will
have devastating consequences for food production, food security and
rural life in general. The reason in most cases is simply because of
the uncertainty and unpredictability caused by constant change in
farming brought about by policymakers and legislators, as well as the
increasing cost of doing business with diminishing returns

TRUST: Marcelo Vieira Lopes
Trust is such a baseline part of our existence that it’s most obvious
when it’s lost. And Lopes argues that that’s just what happened when
COVID struck. People lost the ability to casually interact with others
without considering the risk of infection and adopted new daily
rituals such as masking and social distancing. Many experienced doubts
about everyday experiences, wondering if they had washed their hands
well enough or if a slight soreness in their throat was a sign of a
potentially life-threatening illness. All this manifested as an
uncanny feeling caused by missing the trust in daily life of which we
were never consciously aware.
