CAMP: Music, singing and Drama summer camp will be held in The Marian Hall, Moyvane From July 26th to 31st for 5 to 15 year olds. Time 10 am to 1 pm each day concluding with a concert on Friday July 31st. for information call 0872964229.

VINTAGE Day in Knockanure 22nd of August. Athea had their Vintage Day last Sunday, there was a fine selection of tractors, cars, motorcycles and various stationary exhibits on view, the morning was misty, leaving plenty of dry weather to enjoy the day. Knockanure and Moyvane vintage followers were actively involved.

KERRYMAN July 6th 1940 reports; Celebrations at Franciscan Church in Killarney to mark the sixth centenary of the arrival of the Franciscans in Killarney, sermon preached by Fr Fintan Russell O.F.M. a native of Killarney, celebrations ran from 29th, 30th of June and July 1st 1940. Fr Russell informed us that the Franciscans established Muckross in 1340 and for 200 years was a mighty powerhouse in the midst of our ancestors. In the bad times of 1659 some were deprived of the sacraments for up to 6 years and others walked up to 120 miles to fulfil religious duties.

Bishop O Brien Presided at ceremonies at Muckross Abbey which were attended by 5,000 people. The event was broadcast on radio. Sermon at was preached by Fr W.B. Costelloe OFM of Holy Cross Tralee, he mentioned that c 1754 that Friar O Sullivan write the History of Kerry, the Belgian Friars arrived at Killarney on July 12th 1860 and the present Killarney Franciscan Church opened 1867.

Other news included, Ordination in St Dominic’s Church Washington, DC of D. A O Connell on 31st May 1940, he was grandson of David and Mrs O Connell of Ballagh , Abbeyfeale and he was nephew of Mary Broderick of Ballagh Cottage.

REEK Sunday July 25th, over 25,000 pilgrims climbed Croagh Patrick . The present church is built on the summit in 1905. Some pilgrims were  killed by lightning in 1113. Amber, blue and black glass beads dated to 200 B.C. have been found on the Mountain.

DEATH took place on July 5th 2010 of Eileen Stack, born 87 years ago at Knockathea to Mary Ahern and John Stack, her siblings were Pat Joe , Teresa, Lil, Peg, Mai, John Paul, Sean, Rita, Nan Hurley, and Bridget who died young. Following Requiem Mass at Athea Church Eileen Stack was laid to rest at Holy Cross graveyard Athea, beside her brother Pat Joe (who died in 2004) and other members of her family.

DEATH took place at St Joseph’s Convent Ferbane, Co Offaly of Sr. Declan Murphy on July 19th 2010. Sr. Declan was born at Knockanure. She is survived by her brother John and Sisters of St Joseph, and was predeceased by her sisters Kitty O Connor and Julia Nolan, brothers Michael and Billy. Following Requiem Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ferbane, on Wednesday July 21st Sr. Declan Murphy was laid to rest at Gallen Priory Cemetery.

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny was founded by Blessed Anne Marie Javouhey in 1797 in Chalon, they now work in 60 different countries in 5 continents. Sr. Declan Murphy of Knockanure and Ferbane was Professed in 1945, daughter of Michael Murphy and Maria Galvin of Knockanure. Her grandfather was the second generation of the Murphy’s in Knockanure, died 1906, his wife Marie O Connor died 1908.

DEATH took place on July 23rd 2010 of Peg McCarthy of Knocknacaheragh, Kilmorna, aged 89 years. Peg is survived by her brothers, Jimmy, Denis in England and Tom at Kilbaha, sisters Noreen Gould, Mary in England, and Hannie Sheehy, her brother Jack predeceased her. Following Requiem Mass at St. Bridget’s Church, Duagh on Sunday last Peg McCarthy was laid to rest at Springmount Cemetery.

DEATH Notice Clare FM July 24th 2010 for Thomas Lynch, Chicago, late of Blaine Bridge, Athea, Co. Limerick, he is survived by his wife Mary Spellissey of Ennis. Thomas Lynch was laid to rest in Chicago.
