SOCIAL Day for the Active Retired takes place on Monday 2nd April 2012 at Knockanure Community Centre. Come and enjoy a great meal followed by music and dance. Mass on the day at 12.30pm. Anyone wishing to attend please contact Mary on 068 49799. New members especially welcome.

WALK and Party; 3rd Annual 5Km Sponsored Walk at Knockanure Community Centre on Sunday 1st April 2012,  Assemble at 1.30pm  Refreshments on return and monster Raffle. Easter Party time on the same day from 2pm to 4pm….Activities for the kids will include a fun quiz, Face Painting,Disco with DJ Shicco and Easter Egg Galore for all kids.  Admission 3 euro per child, family concessions.
Please support this great fun packed day…you won’t be disappointed.  Donation will be going to Listowel Hospice.

WALK to the Holy Well at Killeenagh on Sunday, April 1 at 4pm. The well is associated with St. Ita and prayers have been said there since the 6th Century.   Parking is available at Dromtrasna School and the walk will commence from there at 3pm.
Good Friday walk on 6th April from St. Patrick’s Hall, Listowel at 11am in aid of Hospice Care.

BEE for Battens cards; When a person purchases a card for their loved one, a ‘Ribbon’ will be placed on A Remembrance Tree that will be situated in The Square in Listowel.  There will be a Blessing of the Remembrance Tree, on Wednesday 4th April  2012 at 1.00pm. CONGRATULATIONS to Margaret Stackpoole daughter of Dan and Lily who came 16th out of 900 students in a recent cookery competition held in Sligo.

MACALLA Na Mainistreach 2012. Is a 70 page history of Abbeyfeale and district. It contains several historic pictures including Kilmorna House, several recent photos are also included. Sr. Delia Curtin a woman with many relations in the district, gives a detailed  account of the Titanic which sunk on 14th April 1912. Mark Buckley recalls memories of his great grandmother Nora Herlihy O Leary who survived the Titanic.  Patrick Colbert born 1887 in Kilconlea was going to Canada to join the Presentation Brothers in the Titanic. Marconi is recalled in another article he died in 1937. There is a lovely article on Paddy O Connor of Islandboy who was born the day the Titanic sank, Nioclas O Lionaird discussed the past with Paddy and his wife Mai Sugrue, their life and times, Dillon’s were the previous owners of Islandboy farm. Ellis Family of Glenasrone who purchased the Abbeyfeale estate in 1791 are recalled. Other articles include Pre-Christian Ireland, The Blessed Well at Killeenagh, St Ita of Killeedy, Fealside Memories, The Bells of Shandon, Irish words still in use, Local Place Names, Butter Making, Peg Glorney nee Harnett recalls nursing in England during the war, Mary Lyons born 1909 recalls the past, Glor na nGael in Abbeyfeale 1961-2011, remembered by Sr. Delia Curtin, Arthur Vicars who was killed in 1921 and his involvement in the loss of the crown Jewels is recalled. A recollection of the activities of the ICA over the past 100 years and their contribution to the community from education to health and leisure activities. The life of Sr. Teresa Josephine Cotter who died in 2011is remembered by John Cotter. Dromtrasna National School 150 years a growing, the first headmaster was Mr Doody, Patrick O Connor was next, then Patrick O Connell in 1907, John Fitzgibbons was head in 1954. A man who met many celebrities while working at the Carlyle Hotel was Michael O Connell of Kilconley who left Ireland aged 18 years, among the guests were Truman and President Kennedy.

CHRISM MASS:  Bishop Bill is inviting you to join the priests of the Diocese at the Chrism Mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, at 7.30pm, on Tuesday, April 3rd.  As they do each year, priests will also renew their commitment to priesthood at the Mass.  All are welcome.

CHURCH: In 1987, over 1500 Catholic gathered at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. to revive the National Black Catholic Congress Movement that began in 1889.  Daniel Rudd, the founder was convinced that the Catholic Church had a powerful message to proclaim within the Black community, across America, and around the world.   They met in five congresses from 1889-1894.  Again thousands will gather in Indianapolis for the National Black Catholic Congress XI from July 18-21, 2012.

DEATH occurred on March 17th. 2012 of Ned Leahy of The Millstream Abbeyfeale  and St. Ita’s, Convent Street, Abbeyfeale. Ned is survived by his wife Peg and children Jim, Ann, Ita, Paddy, Eamon, Tim, Una, Mark and Martin, his son Emmet predeceased him. Also survived by his sisters Maura Gallahue and Sr. Mary (Ita). Requiem Mass was celebrated in Abbeyfeale Church for Ned Leahy on Monday 19th March 2012, he was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery Abbeyfeale.

DEATH took place on March 17th 2012 of, Noel Mulvihill MVB MRCVS  at home in Castle Road, Glin, he was born at Derry Listowel.  Noel is survived by his wife Rosita, children, Richella, Niall, Peader, Gavin, Noel, Margaret and Brigeeta ,by sister and brothers, Following Requiem Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Glin. Noel Mulvihill was laid to rest in the Church Grounds.

DEATH occurred on 11th March 2012 of Michael Kiely of Rooskagh. In his earlier years Michael worked in the Post Office Staff in Limerick. He was also a columnist for the Limerick Weekly Echo  in the ’50’s. Michael Kiely wrote a  series of articles for the Echo about the GAA Clubs in Limerick and Kerry under the pen name of Old Gael. Following Requiem Mass at St Molua’s Church, Ardagh on March 14th, Michael Kiely was laid to rest in Churchtown Cemetery, Newcastle West. Sympathy is extended to his sister Vera Langan, Dublin and his brother-in-law George Langan.
