BUS to Lough Derg on Friday August 7th, details from 068 31232. Nation Wide was making a documentary on Lough Derg pilgrims recently, while pilgrims were walking on their bare feet and wearing anoraks to keep warm, the RTE presenter was in platforms, light trousers and flimsy top.

BUS to Ballybunion from Listowel every Thursday Pick up at Bus Stop near Listowel Arm’s Hotel at 11am. to Ballybunion and returning at 4pm. Travel passes free, E5 return without Travel pass.

VINTAGE: Knockanure Vintage Day Sunday August 16th. Athea had their Vintage day last Sunday, it was a lovely day out for all the family, just a few short showers put a small damper on the day. As usual the Threshing Mill was the centre of attraction, plenty of vintage cars, tractors and bikes were on display, other side shows were a rope maker, gramophone using a needle a piece of tube and plastic bottle, Morse code keys from all over the world and various pieces of old equipment.

WALK: Nice time of year to walk some of the local back roads and admire the margins which are full of various wild flowers.

DRAMA: Patrick Brosnan and Thomas Gould both pupils of Knockanure N.S. are taking part in the St John’s Drama Summer School under the direction of Steve Sparks.

ST JOHN’S: Wednesday 19th, The Brennans, three sisters from Dublin.

SIAMSA: Oilean continues till August 8th, excluding Sunday August 2nd.

MULVIHILL Manitoba, Canada is one hundred miles north of Winnepeg on Highway 6, between Ashern and Eriksdale. The town is called after Father Mulvihill who of the OMI Order he was also Mayor of the municipality of St. Laurent. Note a Fr Mulvihill OMI of Kilbaha was in Canada, he was uncle of Brother Shine of the Presentation Order Cork.

360 persons surnamed Mulvihill, or a variation of the name, entered the United States through Ellis Island in the period 1892 to 1924.33% of those who entered were less than 20, oldest was 78 years.Orign include 95 from Kerry,30 from Limerick and 62 from USA.17 variations of the Mulvihill name are recorded on the Ellis Island list, details taken from the recent Mulvihill Newsletter. Margie Mulvihill and her group of musicians and singers will head the entertainment on Saturday night October 24th `09 at the Mulvihill Clan gathering in Florida.

DEATHS: The death at the age of 85 took place on July 10th `09 of Maureen Leech nee Sheahan of Carrueragh. Maureen died at Drogheda, Co Louth. Two local first cousins survive her Jerry Enright and Mary Sweeney Reidy. Maureen went to secondary school in Lixnaw taking the train from Kilmorna daily.

DEATH has taken place of Tim McElligott of Gunsboro, he was predeceased by his wife Bridie Cahill and is survived by daughters Norma Leahy of Knockanure and Brid O Brien, sons Tim, Richard, Jerry, Johnny and Donal, sister Maura and brother John. Following Requiem Mass at Ballydonoghue Church on July 18th `09 Tim McElligott was laid to rest at Lislaughtin Churchyard.

Death has taken place of Mary Dee nee O Connor of Gortnagross on July 17th `09; her husband Timmy Dee predeceased her. Mary is survived by her father Joe O Connor, and siblings Jeremiah, John, Joseph, Ann and Joan and Uncle Darby.

Following Requiem Mass at Athea Church on Monday last Mary Dee was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery Athea.

Death; Henry Allingham, the world’s oldest man aged 113 a World War I veteran died July 18th `09 , he left school to work at age 15. Henry urged people to remember the 9 million soldiers who were killed in World War 1.Henry is survived by five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.
