MARRIAGE took place in Duagh Church on May 19th 2012 of Triona O Connor of Kilmorna and John Doherty of Currow, Fr Moore and Fr Kennelly officiated. Best man Kieran O Connor, groomsman was John Daly. Bridesmaids, Deirdre O Carroll and Mary Conway. Flower girl Molly O Connor and pageboy was Jamie O Connor. Parents of the Bride Willie and Kate O Connor of Kilmeaney and the grooms parents are Martin and Mary Doherty of Dicksgrove.

Sinead Dennehy of Ballylongford and Sean Lynch of Leitrim Middle were married at Listowel Church recently. Best man was James Kennelly, grooms men were Brendan Lynch and John Mulvihill. Bridesmaids Mary Dennehy, Tara Dennehy and Sarah O Hanlon, Pageboy Senan Lynch. The bride was daughter of Michael and Margaret Dennehy of Bridge Street and the grooms parents are George and Mary Lynch of Moyvane.

LOCALS went by bus to see Eddie Stone and the Emmanuel House of Providence at Ballinasloe on Sat 26th May 2012, it was an enlightening experience for a novice. St Brendan had a church and monastery nearby which had 3,000 students at one time, also in Clonfert Church is a 14 century wooden statue of Our lady and Child found in a tree in the 19th centaury. St Golden Mile, Brendan’s Tree and Nuns Walk is also nearby.

MARATHON: Women’s Mini Marathon. Locals Hannah Enright and her sister Mary will run in this year’s Women’s Mini Marathon on June 4th. Tiger O Flaherty is preparing for the Cork Marathon at present. Triathlon in Castleisland on May 26th in aid of Parents and Friends.

AA; Alcoholics Anonymous will hold an open public meeting in Duagh National School on Monday June 4th at 8.30pm.

TRINITY College Dublin historians have reconstructed  medieval documents destroyed during the burning of the Four Courts in 1922.

GAA: Two Barry Dardis goals and another from Paddy Kennelly sealed Meath’s Electric Ireland Leinster MFC quarter-final win over Offaly at O’Connor Park, Tullamore on19th May 2012. Meath 3-11,Offaly  1-8. Paddy’s father is from Knockanure.

FULL Moon on June 4th. At last we have got several glorious days of fine weather, grass harvesting has started here, but up the country it is in full swing. Turf cutting is nearly finished for this year; spare a thought for people who are under pressure from laws who strike these at the bottom of the ladder while these at the top have loopholes. Whatever way the referendum goes, we need another general election, to focus TDs away from agendas and on to their job.

FISHING: The casting tuition is now on Sunday, June 3rd, The morning will start at 11am with a demonstration of the different casting methods, using single and double handed rods. Those interested should give their names at 0872213876 or 0872825577 to ensure inclusion on the programme.

CLIFDEN celebrating 200 years from May 25th to June 4th 2012.
You can see from Clifden to the South the Brandon Hills, in Kerry, 90 miles away. Garda Michael Kennelly of Knockanure served there in the 1930’s. He lived in Aillebrack with his wife Alice McHale-Kennelly. Michael was killed ‘on duty’ in January 1934 when he and his colleague Sergeant Forde, were returning to Maam Garda Station after escorting a  patient to Ballinasloe Mental Hospital. The hackney car in which they were travelling left the road and entered the River Corrib at Woodquay. Garda Kennelly was drowned along with the others in the car.

DEATH: Mossie Fitzgerald, Park, Upper Athea,  died on  May 21, 2012, he was predeceased by his wife Hannie Moore who died in June 2004. and survived by daughters, Mary, Lily Ann and Eileen, sons Tom, Con and Maurice and brother John. Mossie was born on Armistice Day 11th of 11th 1918. His parents were Jack Fitzgerald and Liz Barrett. Requiem Mass for Mossie Fitzgerald was celebrated in Athea Church on Wednesday 23rd May 2012. He was laid to rest in Holy cross Cemetery. Mossie was predeceased by his sister Lily and brother Tom.

Death; Ava Marie Hegarty, Munroe, New York, her father from Tullamore, Listowel.  Ava Marie Hegarty, 19, of Chester was pronounced dead at the scene of the one-car crash in the town of Haverstraw, state parks on Monday May 21st 2012.

Death of Sr. Lelia Sheahan of Presentation Convent Roxboro Road, Limerick took place on May 22nd 2012. Sr. Lelia was born at Beale Hill and is survived by her sister Sheila and brother Harold and Presentation Sisters. Requiem Mass for Sr. Lelia was celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church on May 24th, she was laid to rest at Mount St. Oliver Cemetery, Limerick. Sr. Lelia Sheahan was predeceased by brothers, Michael, Canon Jim and Presentation  Brother Eddie. Sr. Lelia was a near relation to the Brodericks and Buckleys in Gortdromagowna. The story is often told of walking a bull from Knockanure to Beale Hill, the bull was so tired he had to be pushed at the end of the journey.

Death of Mary Cullen nee Dore of Loretta, Bruree and  Formerly of Carrueragh, Kilmorna. Survived by husband Pat, sons and daughter and brother Ned. She was predeceased by her brother Jack who died in October 2010. Requiem Mass for Mary Cullen at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Bruree on Monday May 28th 2012. Burial afterwards in Knockanure Cemetery. Mary was  Daughter  of Davie Dore of Carrueragh and Ellen Sweeney of the Glen.

Death of Mary Dalton nee O Sullivan of Upper Athea and Upper Dirreen, Athea. Was predeceased by her husband Martin Dalton, Survived by sons Jim and Paddy, daughter Marian, and sister Sr Rosarii, Requiem Mass at St Bartholomew’s Church, Athea on Monday May 28th 2012.Burial afterwards in Holy Cross Cemetery .
