CLASSES continue at the Knockanure Community Centre, a great night of dancing and fun was held of Friday Night last with Johnny Barrett and the local ladies supplying refreshments.

Thade Gowran CD will be launched in Duagh Heritage Centre on Saturday evening 1st of December; Finuge Rambling House is on November 30th; Tea Dance will be held at Lyrecrompane Resource Centre on Sunday Dec 2nd

BOOKLET on Kerry Art and Culture is now available at the Library, the history section at Tralee Library was closed on Saturday last, old shelves are being removed to be replaced with more modern versions.

POETRY book called Rich Pickings by Mary Lavery Carrig of Tarbert will be launched at Woulfe’s Bookshop, Listowel on Saturday Dec. 1st at 6pm by George Rowley.

Journal of the Ballydonoghue parish will be available on December 7th.

BEST Wishes to Michael Lynch who is the new Chairperson of Writers Week, Michael a native of Kilkenny, is well known at the County Library in Tralee, next years Writers Week will be held from May 28th to June 1st.

Congratulations to Fiona Hanrahan of Lenamore a recently qualified primary school teacher who won four prestigious awards for outstanding academic achievements. Fiona is daughter of Mike and Theresa Hanrahan.

Congratulations to Michael Dowling who was given a Civic Reception at Listowel Town Council offices last week, Michael is involved in voluntary organisations all his life, in almost every good cause you will find him helping and promoting its success.

Melchert: Former workers at Melchert had a reunion recently, the company operated in Listowel for 28 years and over 800 worked there at one time or another.

DENNY’S in Tralee are to reduce their workforce by another 50, the establishment is there for 60 years and in its prime employed up to 400.

HISTORY: Pope Leo Xll was due to celebrate three important anniversaries in 1893, his 84th birthday, 50th anniversary of his Episcopal consecration and the 15th anniversary of his election as Pope, so Cardinal Michael Logue wrote on November 15th 1892 to Fr Ring OMI at Inchicore in Dublin asking him to organise a pilgrimage to Rome to greet the Holy father in February 1893. The Irish pilgrims group consisted of 3 bishops, 103 priests, 136 women and 100 men, people who were not able to travel formed themselves into associate members numbering 1.500.000 supported by 1.700 priests. The pilgrims were organised in groups, St Patrick, St. Laurence, St Albert, St Jarleth, St Bridget, St Dympna, St Malachy, St Macartin, St Kieran, St Coleman, St Finbar, St Mel, St Brendan St Columba, St Munchin, St Kevin, St Columbanus and St Ita. The future Pope Leo was at the House of Commons when Daniel O Connell was speaking there in 1846. Michael Logue the future Cardinal entered Maynooth 1857 and it took six months to elect Pope Pius Vll in 1799. A Universal Jubilee was proclaimed in 1825 and the future pope LeoXlll was chosen to read the address to the then Pope LeoXll. The bicentennial of Mount St. Mary’s University and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. Was celebrated in Nov 2007.

SEAFOOD: World Seafood Congress was held at Croke Park at the end of September, representatives from 35 countries attended, the entertainment was Guinness and oysters on the eve of Congress, next night marquee barbeque and entertainment, next day Leopardstown Racecourse and last but not least Gala Dinner at Hogan Suite of Croke Park. After all that we were told that benefits of eating fish outweigh the risks.
