EVIDENCE of Michael Leahy who lived at Newcastle West on 28th
Aug. 1844 to Devon Commission, continued from last week; A man
in Kerry was fined £10 per acre for burning land, even though
the burning improved the land. Law about burning should be
changed according to Mr Leahy. Mention of Scotch Gentleman who
took farm near Pierce Mahony .Dairy Farmers get advance from
Cork Butter Merchants at high rate of interest to pay their
rent. It cost farmers about 6s per cwt of butter they sell. Some
still collect Tithes even though it is against the law. The
general opinion is that the County Cess should be paid by the
landlord. Eviction case of Con and James Ahern brothers an
ejectment brought against them by the Landlord in 1842 for non
payment of rent, they were turned out of their farm even though
the had an agreement, every obstacle was put in their way of
redeeming their rent, the poor people are still out in a
wretched condition. The condition of tenants is better under the
head landlord.
