A farewell night was held for Patricia Lucey recently in Listowel.

HARVEST Mass was held in Knockanure Church on Sunday last, locally grown produce was presented as offering. Thanks to all who organised and presented gifts which were taken to the altar by Knockanure School children. Cream of the Crop, the best of the best, That is what is gathered in this fruitful harvest, Grown with pride with many hands, The cream of the crop comes from these fine lands.

JUVENILE  Badminton resumes this week at The Community Centre. A parent must accompany a child who wishes to register. Children wishing to join for the season please note:

THANKS: The Shane Healy Fund organizers would like to sincerely thank Máiréad Walsh of Kearney’s Bar for organizing a benefit night recently. Proceeds of the night came to E830. Thanks, too to the Board of Management, principal and staff of Moyvane National School who organized a no uniform day. They collected E200 for the Fund.

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr Jerry Kennelly who recently received an honorary doctorate from UL, he has established another company and hopes if will follow in the footsteps of Stockbyte which he sold a few years ago. His Kennelly Family originally came from Ballylongford and Asdee.

NEW Moon on Oct. 7th. Valentia Observatory will be open to the public from Oct. 8th to 10th, to mark their 150th anniversary. The white thorn, blackthorn and briar have a great abundance of fruit. Land is still in reasonable condition despite the heavy showers.

 FILM for retired people called The Big Sleep will take place at Siamsa Tire on Wednesday, October 6th at 2pm.  Cost E2.  Tea & biscuits served at 1.30pm.

A large group of cyclists passed through the Villages of Knockanure and Moyvane on the morning of Friday Oct. 1st 2010, they got plenty of light showers and rainbows. But the wind was at their backs, the 71 groups were on their way to Galway from Cork, cycling for cancer research.

GREEN: Braskem in Brazil have opened the world’s largest plant to convert ethylene to ethanol and produce up to 200,000 tons of green polyethylene per year.

TRAIL:  On Sunday last many took a walk on local Trails, our nearest is Moyvane Woodland Walk and the I.C.A. had a walk  in Tubbertureen, top of Foley’s Rd, to Direen and back on the new bog road, then there is the John F Leslie walk in Tarbert and in Listowel the Sive Walk and the River Walk. Great Southern Trail from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale is a fine 35km off road pathway. It has several fine bridges, viaduct and a tunnel.

EVIDENCE of Michael Leahy who lived at Newcastle West on 28th Aug. 1844 to Devon Commission, continued from last week; A man in Kerry was fined £10 per acre for burning land, even though the burning improved the land. Law about burning should be changed according to Mr Leahy. Mention of Scotch Gentleman who took farm near Pierce Mahony .Dairy Farmers get advance from Cork Butter Merchants at high rate of interest to pay their rent. It cost farmers about 6s per cwt of butter they sell. Some still collect Tithes even though it is against the law. The general opinion is that the County Cess should be paid by the landlord. Eviction case of Con and James Ahern brothers an ejectment brought against them by the Landlord in 1842 for non payment of rent, they were turned out of their farm even though the had  an agreement, every obstacle was put in their way of redeeming their rent, the poor people are still out in a wretched condition. The condition of tenants is better under the head landlord.

IRISH; The coalition government in 1973 decided that Irish was no longer an essential subject for the Leaving Cert. and general grades in the civil service.

CHURCH: October 1975 the Bishops Conference called for an amnesty for some prisoners to mark the Holy Year and the canonisation of Oliver Plunkett. Matt Talbot was declared Venerable. Restoration of 800 year old Cistercian Holy Cross Abbey celebrated by the people, Church Dignitaries, The President and Taoiseach attended.

DEATH  took place on Sept. 22nd  2010 of Donie Relihan of Islandanny, Duagh, he is survived by his sisters Eileen Gribben, Glasnevin,  and Philomena Giles, Leixlip, brother Fr. Tom . Following Requiem Mass in Duagh Church on September 25th Donie Relihan a retired Garda was laid to rest in Springmount Cemetery. His Brother James at Kilcara predeceased him on May 7th 2010. Father Thomas Relihan  retired a few years ago from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ione after 60 years of service to the Church. Their mother nee Brosnan lived to be over 100 and their father was involved in the war of Independence.
