READING: Local woman Mairéad Sharry O Connor is  reading her books at Brenda Woulfe’s Bookshop in Listowel on Saturday morning 14th April at 11am for children.  Books include Ronan a children’s guide to the Aran Isles and Sive and the Story of the Aran Sweater.

WRITERS: Closing date for The Dan Keane Memorial Primary Schools Poetry Competition is 27th April 2012, details from 068 21074.

NIGHT:A Fundraising Irish Night will take place in Mairéad’s Bar on Friday 13th April at 9.30pm in aid of Senior Citizens fund.   Anyone wishing to make a donation or give a spot prize would be very much appreciated.

STROKE WEEK:  will take place from April 16th – 20th.  Kerrye Stroke Support Group is holding an Information Evening on Wednesday, April 18th at 7.30pm in Meadowlands Hotel where Dr John Mc Manus Consultant in Geriatric and Stroke Medicine Kerry General Hospital will give a presentation on “Stroke –What is it and how can I avoid one?”  All welcome and admission free

LIVING LINKS is holding a special get-together for all those touched by suicide at the Salesian Church, Milford, Castletroy on Sunday 22nd April at 3pm.

A Seminar will be held at The Devon Inn on Monday, April 23 at 7.30pm under the Chairmanship of Bernie Carroll Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention with the HSE.

STUDY: Tim Bingham ,BA MBACP, 0863893530 has been commissioned by the Mid West Regional Drugs task Force to undertake a study in relation to family experiences of home or self detoxification from alcohol and/or drugs.

ROBOT Milking machine demonstration will be held at the farm of William Keane of Lixnaw on Wed. 11th at 1.30pm. Ireland may have to pay a Superlevy bill this year of E16 million, we are being encouraged to produce and our rulers trample our efforts.

SIAMSA : The Prince and the Showgirl will be screened  on Thursday, April 5 at 2pm for the active retired.

WELL done to our local School who came 6th in the 20th Annual Credit Union All Ireland Schools Quiz at the RDS in Dublin on April 1st 2012, 400 primary school children from all across the country competed for the national title. The annual event, now in its 20th year, attracting over 25,000 participants in over 300 venues throughout the 32 counties.

HORSE Fair in Listowel on Thursday last was a great day out for locals, but demand for ponies was  poor. Several of the usual old timers were missing, hope with milder weather they will be back again later in the year.

SHREDDING machine was outside the local Garda Station recently. It is a shame that the history section of the library was not on hand to vet destruction of possible historic data. Old roll books, photographs and artefacts should be considered heritage items and have preservation orders on them.

BISHOP Francis Moylan was born in Douglas, Cork on September 17th, 1735, the son of a merchant.  Francis was educated in Paris and later studied theology at Toulouse University. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1761. He was a curate in Paris, returned to Ireland,  he was appointed Bishop of Kerry by Pope Pius VI on 10th April 1775 and in 1786 he was transferred to the Cork Diocese. His brother Stephen Moylan was born in Cork in 1737, and went to Philadelphia in 1768. He had a letter of introduction from John Dickinson describing him as a “fervent Patriot.”  When he reported to General George Washington at Cambridge, MA in August, 1775. Another brother Myles Moylan born  1838 died in 1909. Captain Myles Moylan fought with Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn and survived. Bishop Moylan was a great supporter of Catholic rights and was against revolution, he believed that if Catholics continued to be loyal citizens they would expect to receive further easing of the Penal laws. He was a great supporter of education and found Lucy Curtayne of Killarney the first Kerry postulant for the Presentation Order, she came back to Kerry professed in 1793.

EASTER: Palm Sunday ceremonies in Knockanure Church attracted a full church, the local children with help of parents, teachers and Margaret put on a lovely pageant illustrating the long Gospel, a lot of work was put into it and thanks to all who participated. Holy Thursday, we had the washing of the feet, blessing of Eucharistic Ministers and the stripping of altar and tabernacle. Good Friday Ceremonies and the Vigil and Easter Sunday attracted both locals and visitors, thanks  the Fr Lucid, Fr O Callaghan, Fr McMahon, Sacristan, Choir, children, parents and all who put so much effort into making ceremonies dignified and meaningful.  Dawn Mass in Duagh attracted a big crowd on a mild misty morning, after mass we were entertained with music, food and tea. DIVINE Mercy Devotions in Listowel On Sunday, April 15th  from 3pm. to 4pm. It will include prayers, benediction and confessions. The new Divine Mercy shrine will also be blessed in Listowel. Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated in The Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale on Sunday, April 15th at 3 pm, Mass, Confessions and a Healing Service.

GRAVEYARD: The St. Michael’s graveyard committee is calling for volunteers to assist the members in the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery. Duagh Cemetery grass cutting is on 12th April. Grass is cut in Old Knockanure Churchyard and it looks clean and tidy, thanks to all involved.

DEATH: Hannah O’Donoghue (nee Brosnan), (Knocknasna and Kilmorna,  died aged 91 years on  April 5th. 2012, she was predeceased by her husband John and siblings Jerry, Mick, Jim and Sheila. Hannah is survived by sons John and Matt, daughters Kathleen, Mary-Ann and Imelda, brother Mossie, sister Peggy, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren,. Funeral Mass on Easter Sunday in Abbeyfeale Church, Hannah O Donoghue was laid to rest afterwards in Reilig Íde Naofa Abbeyfeale.
