BOOK: CHINA: Book Reviews – Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, and
Fly, Wild Swans, by Jung Chang

Máirín Delaney

I first became fascinated about Chinese history after watching the
1987 Oscar winning film The Last Emperor, directed by Bernardo
Bertolucci. The movie was about the life of Puyi, the last Emperor of
China, and it remains one of my favourite films of all time. Fast
forward approximately five years, to the publication of the
best-selling book, Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, written by
Jung Chang. It is the story of three generations of women in her own

RURAL Ageing in Ireland: Key Trends and Issues

Introduction

Ireland’s population is ageing: in 2011, approximately 12 per cent of
the population were aged 65 and older; however, this is projected to
increase to approximately 16 per cent by 2026 (Central Statistics
Office, 2008). Ageing

in Ireland inevitably turns attention to rural areas, where a
significant proportion of older people reside.

PROSTATE patients’ tumours shrink in ‘remarkable’ trial of new treatment

Story by Isabella Machin, A new drug, known as VIR-5500, uses a

FARMING: Irish farming is changing. Costs are rising, markets are
unpredictable, and increasing environmental pressures mean that many
farmers need to look for ways to keep farms sustainable for the next
generation. More and more farmers are looking at practical ways to
diversify while keeping land in agricultural use. One proven option is
leasing land for renewable energy projects.

Solar in Space

Assuming that we can build a huge solar power station in space, we
would then have to get the power back down to us. Fortunately, we know
how to do this: microwaves beamed to a ground-based receiver called a
rectenna. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena demonstrated this was feasible for the first time in
February, as part of their Space Solar Power Project.

Power to the people?

(Image: Reuters/Kumerra Gemechu)

Ethiopia’s green economy is booming, but most of the locals are not
feeling the benefit. Last week, the country opened Africa’s biggest
wind farm. The Ashegoda Wind Farm will generate 120 megawatts of
electricity. It came online just days after Ethiopia announced a
preliminary agreement to build a 1000-megawatt geothermal facility,
the largest in Africa.

GREEN:   January 2011- Conference: Conference for Green Thought and
Environmental Politics At: Institute of European and American Studies,
Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan,

Authors: Sharon Beder ——————————–

Politicians in many nations have not been responsive to community
concerns about global warming because of a highly successful corporate
campaign of misinformation and persuasion. Corporations that would be
affected by measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions set out to
confuse and deceive the public and policy-makers on the issue. They
use corporate front groups, public relations firms and conservative
think tanks to cast doubt on predictions of global warming and its
impacts, to imply that governments do not know enough to act, to argue
that the cost of reducing greenhouse gases is prohibitively expensive
and to promote doubtful solutions such as ‘clean’ coal. Similarly
corporations and their lobby groups have sought to delay treaties and
legislation and shape those that are finally agreed and passed. In
particular they promote voluntary actions by presenting themselves as
environmentally responsible and committed to finding solutions.

DROUGHT: By: Matthew Wills- February 19, 2026

The icon indicates free access to the linked research on JSTOR.

The late seventeenth century saw one of the most significant droughts
of the last 1,000 years in what is today the Midwestern Corn Belt. In
response, the Illinois people moved out of the upper Illinois River
Valley in the 1690s. They migrated south to reestablish in the
American Bottom region where the Mississippi is joined by the Missouri
and Ohio rivers.

CLIMATE: “Renewable energy is not about tackling climate change, it’s
about economic growth and affordable and low energy prices,” Austrian
State Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Zehetner told POLITICO on the
sidelines of the event. Zehetner stressed however that Europeans
wouldn’t be “blackmailed” by the U.S.

Her comments reflect that independently of the U.S., Europe has itself
moved away from the climate fervor that dominated Brussels
policymaking in the first part of this decade. Still, despite some
backsliding on green rules, the EU remains fundamentally in favor of
strong policies to tackle climate change.
