FACTIONS: Sat, 15 Feb, 2020 – Irish Examiner
Faction fighting in Ireland lasted from the start of the 18th century
to the end of the 19th, yet has received little attention from
historians.
Faction Fights Similarly, in the mid-1600s, the O’Briens, lords of Co.
Clare, who owned the lordship of Tarbert, settled many Clare families
in North Kerry, including the Mulvihills; this created resentment
among several local families, and ‘led to many bloody fights’.
The Cooleen faction mostly comprised ‘representatives of old Kerry
families’, chiefly the Flahertys, as well as the Ahernes, the Bání
O’Connors and the Sheehys. Another account also numbered the
Houlihans, the O’Callaghans and the Roches in their ranks.
On the other side, the Lawlors and Black Mulvihills were supported by
the Walshs, the Keanes, the O’Briens, the Sullivans and the Enrights.
The Cooleens and the Lawlors often met at Listowel.
Indeed both groups were characterised in 1826 as ‘Listowel factions’.

EDMOND2 GALLAGHER was born in 1839 near Dromreask, Glin County
Limerick. He died on 12 Apr 1911 in Glin, Co. Limerick. He married
Mary McMahon, daughter of Patrick McMahon, on 30 Jan 1865 in Chapel of
Glin, Co. Limerick. She was born in 1842 near Dromreask, Glin County
Limerick. She died on 25 Feb 1907 in Glin Co. Limerick.
Notes for Edmond Gallagher: My thanks to whoever compiled this
information on the Gallagher family. He joined the British Army on 9
March 1858 in County Limerick. His enlistment papers state that he was
19 years of age, born near Glin, Parish of Glin. He served 20 years
and 169 days. He was discharged at his own request on 30 August 1878.
Because he had served at least 18 years in total, he was entitled to a
military pension. He intends to live in Glin, according to his
discharge papers. He served 5 years and one month in Malta, as well as
2 years and four months in the East Indies. In 1873 he was on Spike
Island, Cork Harbour, when his daughter Mary Ellen was born. He rose
to the rank of Sergeant.

HOME: Almost two years ago, I became a homeowner.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into when Kate and I decided
we were ready to buy a home. I naively thought there wouldn’t be much
to it. Visit some open houses, talk to the bank, sign some papers, and
boom, I’d have a piece of the American Dream. Boy, was I wrong.

DISINFORMATION: According to Joachim Fassbender of the German Police
University, one of VIGILANT’s partners, “disinformation poses
increasing challenges to police forces and society, especially when it
is spread in a coordinated campaign. In times of political, economic
and social instability, disinformation is able to discredit state
institutions, spread hatred and trigger subgroups of the population to
pursue their own political, social or economic objectives in an
inadmissible or unlawful way. The result is a destabilisation of
society and state order. It is therefore important to detect and
analyse disinformation at an early stage and to develop appropriate
preventive or prosecutive response options.”

SINGING: In its noblest and most normative form, virtually every word
of the Mass is meant to be sung (see General Instruction of the Roman
Missal, 39-41, Sacrosanctum Concilium, 113, and Musicam Sacram, 5,
27). And yet, in most parishes today, the high point of the entire
celebration—the Eucharistic Prayer—is perhaps the part that is sung
the least.
Among the reasons given for this situation, we might often hear:
Singing the Eucharistic Prayer would make the Mass far too long. The
Roman Rite had a silent Canon for 1000 years—why would we start
singing it now? If the priest were to drone on and on, people might
lose attention or interest. It’s just too difficult for most priests
to sing well, and many of them were never taught how.
