FR. KEVIN is definitely working hard at the moment. Since the start of the pandemic he has done his best to keep Masses going and to provide church services for everyone. Funerals have been in double figures since Christmas, last week he had three funerals and as I write two funerals already this week, Monday and Tuesday. All these families are coping with the grief of losing family members but think about Fr. Kevin’s position. He has to support the families, organise the funeral Masses and deal with their grief. He lives alone with no family members in the area and is restricted by the 5km rule the same as everyone else. He can’t visit parishioners or socialise. He deserves our support and respect. We are slow to pick up the phone and thank him for his efforts. It is easy to complain but there are times we need to compliment him and let him know we appreciate what he is doing.
THOSE WE SAID GOODBYE TO: The list seems to get longer every time I write. Pat Moloney passed away on December 22 after a short illness, Jerry Fitzmaurice left us on Christmas Day. John Walsh of Bruach na Gael died suddenly on January 07. Nora Gould of Kilmorna died on January 08. Nora was a sister to Tom McCarthy, Kilbaha. Brenda Dineen of Lenamore collapsed and died suddenly on January 09. Her death was a serious shock to her Mom, Carmel, Dad, Donal and her brother, Brian. She was a niece to Noreen Roche and was only 26. Sheila O’Carroll’s funeral Mass was celebrated in Moyvane on Wednesday, January 13. She was the daughter of Marie O’Carroll nee Broderick of Coilagurteen. Denis O’Flaherty of Tubbertoureen passed away on January 12 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Mary, son, Neilus and daughters Denise and Marie. Denis had been wheelchair bound for many years but he lived life to the full. One day later Dick Cunningham of Kilbaha lost his fight for life, a really sociable man, Dick loved to sing and have a social drink so the current climate did not suit him, especially as he lived alone. He is survived by his sisters, Peg & Joan and brothers, John Chris and Brian and extended family. Pat Guiney of Coolaclairig passed away on January 29 having battled illness for 16 years. Pat was brother to Mary Collins of Lenamore who ran Moyvane Post Office until it’s closure in April 2019. Sympathy is offered to his wife Eileen, daughter, Martha and all members of his family. Mary Stack of Upper Aughrim lost her battle for life on Saturday, January 23. Mary was a native of Co. Sligo and was predeceased by her husband John. She was a really quiet, kind lady with a lovely smile. She will be missed by her daughters, Margaret & Mary and sons, Pat and Cathal and their families. On Sunday, Bernie Walsh of Moyvane North passed away. A native of Dublin herself and her husband Jackie relocated to Moyvane many years ago and really fitted into the community. Jackie died in January of last year. Sincere sympathy is extended to the many families who have lost relatives. Since Christmas we have lost 12 people ranging in age from 26 to 90, mainly in their 50’s and 60’s. During the same period we lost just one!
