Tribute to the late Sister Margeret Flaherty of Tubbertureen by Mary Beth Lennon:

Sister Margaret died on January 31, 2006, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, at the great age of 96.  I had the privilege of knowing this tremendous lady and meeting her many dedicated and loving nieces and nephews who came from New York and Ireland for her funeral.  Her former parishioners were also devoted to her–one gentleman, a retired American Air Force general, traveled from Texas with his daughter for the burial; masses were said in her memory all over the U.S., England and Ireland.  Sister Margaret (born Mary) was a family friend; my grandmother was Nora Scanlon Fitzgerald, born in Aughrim, Moyvane on the family farm and later lived on the Steeple Road, Tarbert. All who knew Sister Margaret can attest to her great love for Ireland and her dedication in serving all God’s people.

SISTER M. MARGARET FLAHERTY, MHSH On January 31, 2006, SR. M. MARGARET FLAHERTY, MHSH, died at The Villa, a care facility for the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart and the Sisters of Mercy, on Bellona Avenue, Baltimore, MD. Sr. Margaret is preceded in death by her sisters Julia Walsh, Sr. Loretta (Bridie) Flaherty, Sr. Majella (Hannah) Flaherty and Ellie O’Keefe and brothers Denis, John, Michael, James, Ned and Con. She is still cherished in Ireland by her sisters Nora Moore, Catty Scannell and her sister-in-law Bridie Flaherty, in England by her sister Sr. Nuala (Peg) Flaherty and by a loving family in Ireland and in the United States by nieces and nephews and their children who have remained devoted to Sr. Margaret and by her sisters in community, the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart in Towson, MD. Sr. Margaret’s life as a missionary spanned 75 yrs and many missions from Baltimore, MD, Irvington, MD, San Antonio, TX, Pueblo and Cortez, CO and Claypool and Mammoth, AZ.
