MOYVANE POST OFFICE
It finally happened, Moyvane Post Office closed its door for the last time on Tuesday, April 30th. This is what’s called progress in 2019. According to the accounts published recently it’s profits rose from €8.4m in 2017 to €41m in 2018 and this among other things, was due to Post Office closures according to the report. On August 28, 2018 the company announced the closure of 151 offices. At that point in time sixteen offices had closed so are we to take it that in the four months to the end of December the rise in profits was significantly impacted by closures? I think not. An Post has ridden rough shod across rural Ireland and has been allowed to do so by Government. The Post Master’s “voluntary” redundancy was anything but voluntary, they were pushed. Their incomes had dropped to an unsustainable level and they were told if they didn’t take the package they would have to close in three years time WITHOUT any compensation. They had Hobson’s choice. You will be pleased to know that An Post is spending €5m on rebranding. Very important, it is getting rid of the wavy lines and replacing them with a circle. They don’t like the shade of green anymore so they are changing to a different, lighter green and the single word “Post” is being changed to An Post. We are so happy for them. But we in rural Ireland needed a Post Office in our community and that €5m would go a long way towards keeping communities alive. I am totally disgusted with the attitude of corporate Ireland. Are you all so well off and so greedy that you can turn your backs on communities? The Post Office kept the local shop and the butcher and many other businesses operating but who is to say that they will survive into the future.
