Moyvane

Newtown Athletic

Moyvane has its own vibrant soccer club called Newtown Athletic. Sponsored by Speedy’s Bar, they play their Kerry District League home games in the Creamery Field – a well maintained pitch right in the heart of downtown Moyvane. The club has been in operation for the past few years and has been going strength to strength with promotion last year to Division One. Indeed, the hopes of some fancied teams from around the Kingdom have been dashed by the artistry, artillery and trademark Newtown passion. Newtown Athletic are coached by Brendan Hogan and managed by John Scanlon.

Newtown played Sneem Santos in Moyvane on May 6th, 2007. The only goal of the game was scored by Sneem 20 minutes into the first half, despite some great defending by the Newtown lads. The second half showed Newtown trying their best with goalie Tommy Barrett transforming into a striker in a last ditch effort for an equalizer. However, the plucky South Kerry team were unyielding. After the match, manager John Scanlon quiped “Newtown had great chances of a draw and even a win but unfortunately luck was not on our side today”.
